By BBN staff:The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) today released a statement expressing disappointment at the Belize government’s reluctance to ban gillnets, as detailed in a press release issued on December 5.

The SEA says that while the government is committed to taking laudable new measures such as expanding areas where gillnets are banned, a moratorium on the issuance of new gillnet permits, seasonal permits and adjustment from networking, he is aware that law enforcement is a great challenge for all law enforcement agencies; and the most realistic and meaningful solution is to ban gillnets.

“SEA, co-manager for over twelve years of two marine protected areas off the coast of the village of Placencia: Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve and Laughing Bird Caye National Park, knows firsthand the importance of maintenance of a healthy marine environment. the environment and the sustainable use of its resources. We call on the government to provide further information on key issues of importance, such as improving the strategic enforcement of existing laws, implementing new measures and increasing fines for fishermen caught with illegal nets or placing nets in prohibited areas, ”SEA reiterated.

The association says it will continue to advocate and support the ban on gillnet fishing in Belizean waters.

SEA continues to collaborate with all partners in the safeguard of our marine resources and to play an active role in the implementation of all actions aimed at the protection of these resources.
