By BBN staff: The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) reported that today a joint patrol by SEA rangers and Belize Coast Guard personnel along the coast near Seine Bight Village led to the confiscation of three illegal gillnets.
The gillnets were placed 35 yards, 50 yards and 150 yards from shore, respectively.
Three Bonefish and one permit, both of protected species, were found entangled in the nets.
SEA also found a hammerhead shark, for which the fishing season is currently closed, and other fish species have also been found entangled in the nets.
There was no one nearby, therefore the nets were tagged as found objects.
Fishers are reminded that “putting a gillnet within half a mile of any inhabited locality” is an offense.
SEA says it will continue to conduct strategic patrols to ensure the protection of Belize’s marine resources and thanks the Belize Coast Guard for their continued support.
